Building resilience within urban settings plays a vital role in ensuring that cities have the capacity to function in the face of potential threats and challenges while still allowing their residents to survive and thrive. Social cohesion is a key factor that directly influences urban resilience levels positively and can be described as the connection and sense of belonging experienced by people in a society that strengthens social relationships built on the levels of participation and trust among individuals.
The Unio: for you, by you project aims to create a Student Community Center that is a free, neutral and safe space for university students in South Australia with a focus on increasing their levels of social connectedness.
The design concept uses simple but powerful themes associated with humans and their relationship with storytelling known to foster connection and communication as inspiration to create an occupant-led space based on:
The project would feature both hard and soft infrastructure settings that enable:
1) positive collaboration opportunities through peer-to-peer services and self organization
2) positive co-creation opportunities to a build sense of ownership + belonging
3) shared cultural experiences and a celebration of diversity
in order to allow its users to feel seen, heard and acknowledged and increase their holistic wellbeing and connection with their peers to build more resilient, socially cohesive and healthier communities in the long run as a result. It is a story-telling space dedicated to letting its end users tell their stories and co-create their own realities in their own way.
